TRAVELLIN' BLUE

Gestart eind 2020 als 'full Belgian' Travellin' Blue Kings, kent de band een belangrijke update in het najaar 2023. Resultaat, een indrukwekkende stamboom en stevige adelbrieven: Blues Lee, Last Call, The Electric Kings, The Scabs, Hideaway, Howlin' Bill, … just to name a few.

Travellin' staat er niet toevallig, de vijf heren dweilden met hun respectievelijke bands heel Europa af. Je kon hen op festivalpodiums vinden in Noorwegen, Zweden, Polen, Duitsland, het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Frankrijk, Zwitserland, Italië, Spanje en uiteraard ook in elke uithoek van de Benelux.

Het in 2022 uitgebrachte 'Bending The Rules'-album kon op meer dan behoorlijk wat airplay rekenen in Europa én de States (62 weken (!) in Roots Music Report's Top 50 Blues Rock Album airplay chart in de VS) waardoor de band geboekt werd in Frankrijk, Nederland, Duitsland en Noorwegen.

Maar zeg voortaan nooit meer 'Travellin' Blue Kings', maar zeg 'Travellin' Blue' !! Een gewijzigde bezetting, een vernieuwd repertoire, gepend voor het volgende full album dat de vorige albumtitel "Bending the Rules" nog méér eer aandoet, noopten de bandleden tot deze (kleine) naamswijziging.

Na "Come Hell or High Water" en "Better Left Unsaid", staat de ballade "The Closer Is King" als single in de spotlight. Het bewijst andermaal dat "Take The Edge Off" een zeer gevarieerd album is. Het klankenpalet ademt resoluut de 21ste eeuw, maar de nummers steunen op traditie, met een portie "ken je klassiekers" en een occasioneel snuifje seventies. Back to the future als het ware …

De plaat ligt sinds 21 februari op CD en blauw vinyl (what else?) in de winkel, is digitaal wereldwijd verkrijgbaar en kan op meer dan de nodige aandacht rekenen. Het album heeft het in maart zelfs tot # 9 in Roots Music Report's Top 50 Blues Album Chart in de Verenigde Staten geschopt m.a.w. "Take The Edge Off" behoorde op dat ogenblik tot de 10 meest gedraaide blues albums in de States, althans volgens Roots Music Report !!  

Voor één keer laten we anderen de nieuwe single voorstellen. Dit is wat Amerikaans muziekjournalist Geoff Wilbur schrijft over "No Gooder":

"The band gets deeper into the blues rock weeds with the chunky rhythm of "No Gooder", a song with a grinding beat that is a little reminiscent of George Thorogood in places while diverting to an almost-dissonant, edgy, coolly uncomfortable musical direction elsewhere, resulting in a cohesive yet extremely original number, all the while leaning into the verbally awkward "you're no gooder, no", making it sound cool and oh, so very blue."

Zijn Britse collega Nick Swansea verwoordt het dan weer als volgt:

"'No Gooder' is a smouldering stomping yet slower groove based track, the music struts along with a crisp melodic and blues based feel à la Jeff Beck. The guitar playing from Luke Alexander is outstanding adding a beautiful atmosphere to this excellent song which cascades with a seventies rock texture. Vocally JB Biesmans has a strong voice, lots of groove with this dynamic bluester, its one of those tracks where the music pulls you in with its hypnotic charm."
